Watersports in Southern Wales
Southern Wales' coastline stretches from Newport across to Porthcawl and embraces a vast variety of activities, but sailing is one of the major pastimes with the Marinas at Cardiff Bay, and close neighbour Penarth. The waterside playgrounds of Southern Wales add that touch of continental spice to any holiday.
Try wake boarding or Kite surfing in Porthcawl, or take a gentle cruise from Barry to Flat Holm Island nature reserve, or along the coast on the Balmoral or Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer still in operation.
Dunraven Bay, Southerndown, is a firm favourite with surfers as this has the second highest tide-change in the world. Along the 'Golden Coast' (Newton Bay, Trecco Bay and Rest Bay), the watersports centre of Southern Wales, you can learn to surf, wind surf, scuba dive, sea kayak and canoe all with experienced trainers. The beaches are European Blue Flag awarded and the trainers are all nationally accredited.
But not all watersports are along the coast! Wales is a land of mountains and valleys, lakes, rivers and canals that offer the beginner calm and safe water. The beautiful Wye Valley, the border between England and Wales, has wonderful canoeing. Wordsworth called it 'The most romantic Valley in the World', and it's easy to see why. Along the nearby Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal you can take things at a leisurely pace on traditional narrow boats as you relax and watch the world go by.
Add to this the exciting 'Coastal Culture' from Cardiff Bay to Porthcawl - restaurants, bars, inns, hotels and guest houses - and you will find a region of unparalleled quality and choice.
